I was speaking to someone people recently about their business website and online marketing in Kenya,Tanzania and some parts in Africa. They felt that because they didn’t sell online and people could find them when searching on their business name, they didn’t need to do any online marketing.
I was disappointed to find out that this is a fairly common misconception of business owners and managers.
It only took a short conversation with this person for them to understand how important is for them to be marketing online today given that most people start to research their purchases online especially in Kenya,Tanzania and Africa at large.
Why do you need to be marketing online even though you don’t sell online? Here’s why:
People don’t search for your business name
Do you think the 80%+ of people who research purchase online just type in a business name and then pick up the phone. No, that’s how you use the Yellow Pages not the Internet.
People have a problem they need solved, and they search using keyword terms based on their current understanding of the problem they have. You need to be found by these people when they’re really early in their buying process.
The old fashioned business website which is all about your products and services just won’t get found by these people.
Granted, yes some people know what they need and will search directly on that product or service. This still isn’t your business name and you need to marketing yourself online so you appear ahead of your competition in the search engine results.
How you market
Marketing to these people isn’t marketing, or advertising, as you might be used to. They don’t want “salesy” messages showing product features, they want help with the problem they have.
To market to these people you need to understand them, understand their buying process and understand how your products and services help them with their problem.
Then you need to be found by them when they search on Google.
To be found , you need to write the content they need, content which helps them with their problem and write that content to the keywords they’ll use to to search for it.
Google and the other search engines will index your content and rank it for the keywords your buyers are using.
Get your content to rank well on Google
Your helpful content is no good if people can’t find it. You need to work to improve the ranking of your content on the search engines.
A search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy which focuses on continually producing fresh content to your targeted keywords, social media publishing and sharing and link building will achieve the results you need.
The most important part of this strategy is continually publishing fresh content to your targeted keywords. The more you write, the more content the search engines have to index and the more keywords you’ll rank well for.
Provide a conversion path
Traditional marketing and advertising got your message out there and then you stood by the phones waiting for people to call.Many businesses in Kenya,Tanzania and Africa expect the same thing to happen online, it doesn’t.
More often than not these people doing research aren’t ready to call, and if you don’t capture their contact details there and then, when they’re on your website, you might never see them again.
Provide a conversion path for them, offer them something they really want in return for their name and email address.Work the entire buyer journey
Once you have their name and email address you can help them through their entire buying journey.
Send them helpful information designed to get them back to your website for more content which helps them make the right buying decision.
When they’re ready to buy, they’ll contact you. If they don’t contact you, you’ll know they’re ready to buy from their activity on your website and you’ll contact them.
